ISLAMABAD:
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has released the Performance Report of Electricity Distribution Companies (DISCO) for the financial year 2024-25, revealing a cumulative loss of Rs472 billion to the national exchequer during the year.
According to the report, the losses were recorded under transmission and distribution (T&D) losses and poor collection of electricity bills.
The report said that DISCOs incurred losses amounting to Rs 265 billion due to inefficiency in transmission and distribution during the year. Moreover, another loss of Rs207 billion was recorded due to low recovery of electricity bills.
The report notes that DISCOs have not achieved their targets for reducing transmission and distribution losses. NEPRA termed T&D losses as a persistent challenge for the power sector and expressed serious concerns over continued inefficiencies.
The regulator also expressed concern about low bill collection rates, saying these losses contribute significantly to growing circular debt in the electricity sector.
