- Safety researchers spot a false application live of large book targeting Mac users
- The application replaces the legitimate and displays a false critical error
- The error obliges the user to submit his sentence of 24 -words seeds
Cybercriminals target cryptocurrency owners with Apple Mac devices using highly sophisticated malware hides in sight and aims to steal their seed sentences.
A “seed phrase” is a 12 or 24 words combination that allows anyone to load an existing wallet in a new device and access all funds inside.
In a new report, Moonlock, security researchers, said that there were currently four active campaigns distributing a lively application of large book live from an official offer that allows users to send, manage and follow their cryptographic portfolio.
“Effort to high issues”
The campaign would have been active since August 2024, and although the report does not discuss how the victims ended up downloading the Fake Ledger Live application, it details its operation: it replaces the existing and legitimate application, then during the connection process displays a false error message.
The “critical error” can only be corrected by subjecting the sentence of 24 -words seeds which is then immediately relayed to the attackers.
“It’s not just a flight. It is an effort with high issues to thwart one of the most reliable tools in the world of cryptography, ”explains Moonlock. “And thieves do not retreat.”
“Users should consider the news as a clear signal to remain vigilant,” concluded researchers, urging users to be wary of phishing emails, never to share their seed sentences with anyone and to download only crypto-money wallet applications from legitimate sources.
Cryptocurrency users continue to be a major target for cybercriminals everywhere-in the United States, users have lost around $ 9.3 billion for various scams in 2024, only, Pear said, citing an FBI report, an increase of 66% compared to 2023.
