For many MacBook owners, it is a nightmare that has become reality: you open the cover of your dear laptop and light it, only to find that the display is a waste, with black bars and glitchy colors wherever you look. The screen has been ruined, and it will cost a lot to say them well.
In a disturbing way, it is actually much easier to experience this than you expect: a single apparently harmless action can cause hundreds of dollars in damage.
This is something that Tiktok User Classicheidi discovered the hard. In a video downloaded on the social media platform, Classicheidi explained that they had placed a piece of card on the keyboard of their MacBook Air, then closed the cover.
When they covered it a little later, the screen was ruined.
An expensive error
It is an unfortunate incident, but there is a reason why it happened. It is not because the displays of Apple laptops (or those of any other manufacturer, by the way) are low or poorly manufactured. But although they should certainly be treated with care, there is another problem at stake.
This is what Apple describes in an assistance document such as the “tight tolerances” of his laptops. Apple MacBooks are designed to be as thin as possible, which means that the gap between the keyboard and the display is very small when the lid is closed.
Everything that is placed in this gap – even something as modest as a piece of card – can be pushed against display, the resulting pressure resulting in serious damage.
For this reason, Apple warns that “leaving any equipment on your screen, your keyboard or your palm rest could interfere with the screen when closed and damage your screen.” If you have a camera cover, a palm rest cover or a keyboard cover, Apple says you should delete it before closing the cover of your laptop to avoid this type of scenario – unfortunately, this is something we have seen before.
