- Magstor’s Thunderbolt 5 LTO Drive built on its 2020 Thunderbolt 3 model
- TB5 certainly adds speed, but what is the advantage of the real world for the band?
- There is no word on prices, but it is unlikely to be cheap
Magstor introduced the first Dro Tape Drive in the world in 2020, mixing traditional strip storage with modern connectivity, and now, the company announced the first Do Tape Drive in the world of Thunderbolt 5 in the world.
The company describes its latest product as the next step in the supply of flexible backup solutions and high -speed archives for professionals working with large volumes of data.
The storage of adhesive tape continues to be a standard for long -term archive needs due to its durability and capacity, and the Thunderbolt 5 LTO reader is designed to be used in heavy data environments such as media production and interprets. By integrating Thunderbolt 5, Magstor hopes to offer a faster and more rationalized connection between band equipment and modern computer systems.
Increased speed
The new reader works with MacOS and Windows and although Thunderbolt 5 offers a higher bandwidth than the previous versions, the strip speeds remain limited by the format itself.
Although Magstor has not provided many technical specifications, this is a new product, the new product will support the LTO-9 strips (native compressed capacity of 18 TB / 45 TB), as its predecessor does.
There is not yet confirmation on compatibility with the new generation LTO-10 strips, which should arrive in the second quarter of 2025, which offer up to 36 TB of compressed native capacity and 90 TB, but it would be a missed opportunity if this support is not included.
Thunderbolt 5 reaches data transfer rates of up to 80 GOPS (10 GB / S) bidirectionally in standard mode, and up to 120 GOPS in a direction when using the BOOST bandwidth mode.
The LTO-10 should offer reading speeds of around 472 MB / s, which is a step compared to the LTO-8 at 360 MB / s and LTO-9 at 400 MB / s.
Magstor says that Doner Thunderbolt 5 LTO will be published by the end of 2025. Prices have not yet been announced, but it is unlikely to be cheap.
LTO-9 Thunderbolt 3 Drive of the company sells $ 6,299 and that the additional speed of Thunderbolt 5 will justify the inevitable price increase remains to be seen.
“At Magstor, we undertake to push the limits of what is possible in data storage,” said Tim Gerhard, product vice-president at Magstor. “After revolutionizing the market with the very first Drive Thunderbolt 3 LTO, we are delighted to increase the bar with Thunderbolt 5 again, ensuring that our customers have access to the most powerful and flexible storage solutions available.”
