Fede Valverde ran riot in the first leg to put Real Madrid 3-0 ahead and into the Champions League quarter-finals. This is the 36th time they have played a European second leg with a lead of three or more goals – on the previous 35 occasions they have held on. Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, last overturned a first-leg deficit in the UCL Round of 16 over a decade ago, suffering five exits in such circumstances in the years since.
What was lost in the magnificence of Valverde’s hat-trick was that Alvaro Arbeloa was fielding a weakened Real Madrid team. Kylian Mbappe was left out of the first leg, but returned to the fold in Manchester, albeit on the bench. It could and should have been 4-0 as well, as Vinicius Junior missed a penalty in the second half.
Guardiola has a habit of overcomplicating his tactics in the latter stages of the Champions League, but this Man City team is so limited that that may not be an option this time around. Despite only joining the club in January, Antoine Semenyo is their fourth top scorer, two behind Rayan Cherki and three ahead of Phil Foden.
They don’t fare much better at the back either. Valverde made Nico O’Reilly and Marc Guehi look like schoolboys last week, but perhaps most worrying of all was how woefully late Ruben Dias was all evening.
