Mariah Carey hinted something special was going to happen for her 25th anniversary Glitter, the film she once called a disaster but has since come to love.
Talk to Varietythe 56-year-old confirmed plans were underway, although the exact details are still being worked out.
“[There are] plans for a deluxe and a reissue, or maybe just one, I don’t know. We’re getting started. I’m excited about it,” she said.
The news comes as the film has quietly disappeared from streaming services over the past month, fueling speculation that something was on the way.
Whether it’s a deluxe edition, a complete reissue, or a combination of the two, Carey seems genuinely excited to revisit the project.
It’s quite a turnaround for a film that had one of the most difficult releases in Hollywood history.
Glitter was released in theaters on September 21, 2001, just ten days after the September 11 attacks, with a soundtrack released the same day the tragedy unfolded.
The timing was catastrophic.
The film only grossed $5.3 million worldwide and the critical reception was brutal. Carey herself was candid about how she felt afterward.
“I used to hate it. I was so wondering, ‘Why did I do that?'” she admitted, clearly describing it as “a disastrous flop” that came during a “difficult time” in her life.
But Glitter had quite a second act.
In 2018, the #JusticeForGlitter movement took off online and, remarkably, propelled the soundtrack into the iTunes Top 10 albums, 17 years after its original release.
Fans who came to see the film as a campy, misunderstood gem finally had their moment. And Carey got hers. “And then, you know, it became something that I really loved and it kind of took off,” she said.
Whatever the form of Glitter anniversary takes place, one thing is clear: this time around, Carey and her fans are ready for it.
