“Harail since 1974,” he captioned the post on X.

While it seemed to surprise fans of the “Interstellar” star that he would be a Washington fan, McConaughey opened up about his support for the NFL team in 2014.

He told GQ magazine that he became a fan because of old Western films. He said he “rooted for the Indians” and that because he loved hamburgers, he loved the Redskins because of their linebacker Chris Hanburger.

At the time, he also expressed support for keeping the Redskins nickname. Then-team owner Daniel Snyder promised not to change the name but did so in 2020 amid a summer of racial tension in the United States

“What’s interesting to me is how quickly it was pushed into the social consciousness,” he told the magazine at the time. “We were all okay with the 1930s, and all of a sudden we go, ‘No, I have to change it?’ “It seems like when the first dike breaks, everyone gets on board. That’s not how they’re going to use their pulpit.

“It’s like my feeling about gun control: ‘I get it. You have a right to have guns. But look, let’s forget about that.'”

The Redskins name is still a hot button issue for fans of the franchise. It has emerged that the old logo will be honored in some way as the franchise looks to build a new stadium at the old RFK site.

Now, as Commanders, McConaughey still supports the team and will closely watch as Washington appears to make the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1991 season.
