Earlier this year, Max Homa said he had had a “come to-jesus” when he decided to delete X, formerly Twitter.

The PGA star was once active on the application, but he said in March that the platform was now “for the sick”.

“I was sick. I’m just trying to be healthy now,” said Homa at the time.

Before John Deere’s classic, Homa stood firm on his personal boycott of “the horrible and horrible place”.

“The reason is just the vitriol that you read online. It has become a safe refuge for people who are, I think, angry with themselves. It is quite absurd to see how much people feel comfortable to write horrible things,” Homa told journalists on Wednesday.

“Twitter or x or anything is a horrible and horrible place. It took me a while to grasp how much it can have an impact and how much I miss the connection with the fans, but nothing comes without so much hatred and anger. There is a lot of love in there, but, unfortunately, it is overwhelmed by a very bad.”

Homa has suggested that the increase in the game, which, according to him, “seems fun like hell in golf”, could contribute to online vitriol.

“People say bad things on the internet. You ask people to tell you that you should die on the internet. It has nothing to do with not to connect. I would love to continue to connect with people, but I try to do it a little more in person because I have not yet met someone in person who said anything at a distance.

“It is a safe refuge for a – holes, for lack of a better term.”

Homa has had trouble lately. He missed seven cups in 16 tournaments this year with a single Top 25, which came to the Masters. It was his first reduction in the championship opened last year, but, since then, he finished 70th, tied to the 30th, tied to the 60th, tied to the 51st and equally in the 54th with another pair of missed cuts.

Last year, it was ranked 10th in the world. Last month, he wore his own bag for 36 holes of us open qualifications. He missed the tournament after a heartbreaking three shots on his last hole, where two putts would have put him in the Oakmont tournament.
