Karachi: residents of the metropolis are likely to attend an increase in temperature on Saturday with the Pakistan meteorological department (PMD) warning of an imminent heat wave in the city during the current month.
The weather Jawad Memon warned that because of a change in the direction of the wind, the mercury should oscillate between 36 and 38 degrees Celsius which will be felt as 39 ° C at 41 ° C due to high humidity levels.
However, weather conditions are likely to improve in the evening due to the sea breeze, he added.
Meanwhile, PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir said that the weather in Karachi is likely to remain normal for the next 10 days, the city should experience a heat wave in late April.
Noting that a moderate drought has been declared in most regions of the Sindh, the head of the Met Office deplored that there was no more soil (soil not developed / open) in Karachi and due to concrete surfaces, rainwater is found in the sea instead of being absorbed in the ground.
Calling for the need to implement rain harvesting in the metropolitan city, Nazir said that water wells must be built in areas where there is still open soil and unmanned land that can help increase the levels of groundwater.
Relaxation of rain prospects, the spokesman said that international weather applications were planning excessive showers in Pakistan and that any prediction with regard to the monsoon season would only be possible at the end of May.
Deploring that the country testifies to a 61% drop in average precipitation of the winter season, associated with a reduced snow drop by 50%, the manager warned that heat waves should strike different areas of the country from April 14 to April 19 with expected temperatures between 46 ° C to 48 ° C in Sindh.
Temperatures should remain above average between April and June, he said that heat wave type conditions will persist in southern Punjab and parts of the Sindh.
In addition, Nazir said that if the country will experience average precipitation during this period – which represents 19% of the country’s water storage – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit -Baltistan will receive precipitation less than normal.
The weather forecast follows a previous Warning of PMD to the prediction of a heat wave greater than 4 ° C-6 ° C in the center of Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Cashmere.
Excessive heat can also lead to dust storms and wind storms, potentially damaged vulnerable infrastructure such as electric posts, trees, vehicles and solar panels, had warned it.
The general public, especially children, women and the elderly, is invited to avoid direct exposure to the sun and remain well hydrated.
Farmers are also invited to manage their harvesting activities, in particular the wheat harvest, depending on the forecast, and to ensure the safety of the cattle.
The rise in temperatures in northern areas can cause accelerated snow melting – increasing the risk of flooding.
