Meryl Streep revealed that Anne Hathaway intervened directly with the producers of The devil wears Prada 2 about the sizes of the models in the film, being promised that the casting wouldn’t look like what she witnessed on the real runways of Milan Fashion Week.
Talk to Harper’s Bazaar In an interview published Wednesday (March 25), Streep, 76, described participating in real fashion shows during Milan Fashion Week as research for what’s next.
What she saw made her think.
“I was struck by the fact that not only did everyone look young to me, but also that the models were alarmingly thin,” she said.
“I thought everything was taken care of years ago.”
Hathaway, 43, apparently had the same reaction and took immediate action.
“Annie also succeeded,” Streep continued, “and she went directly to the producers about it, promising them that the models from the show we were preparing for our movie wouldn’t be so scrawny!”
Streep’s verdict on her co-star was unambiguous: “She’s a stand-up girl.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Streep discussed the extraordinary audience reaction to filming the sequel on location in New York last summer, alongside returning actors including Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci.
The level of attention even caught her off guard.
“Even though we were aware of the impact of the first film twenty years ago, I don’t think any of us were prepared for the ambush of goodwill and hungry attention that overwhelmed us,” she said.
“We needed police barriers and crowd control.”
On the subject of her approach to acting, Streep confirmed that she has left method acting well behind her. She recalled the misery of trying out for the original film.
“I was [miserable] in my caravan. I could hear them all swaying and laughing. I was so depressed!” she said Weekly Entertainment in 2021. “This is the last time I try a method.”
THE The devil wears Prada 2 hits theaters on May 1st.
