- Leaks tease that meta quest 4 and pro 2 are in development
- Meta Quest Pro 2 would have been canceled twice before
- No release date or specification details now
The third time could really be charm, friends. Despite the information according to which two distinct prototypes of Meta Quest Pro 2 was canceled in the middle of development, Meta would have another crack in its high -end offer, according to initiate sources – and less surprisingly, it apparently works on A meta-establishment 4.
This comes from Bloomberg Mark Gurman, who, in his last newsletter, cited sources of familiar initiates with the XR plans of Meta, with these initiates revealing that these two quest helmets were in preparation – alongside a few smart glasses Meta that we have pointed out before such as one with a display that could land later this year.
While leaks must be taken with a pinch of salt (unofficial information can always change, in particular with Meta, that we have seen cancellation projects before), the meta-establishment 4 being in progress should not be a shock. While the meta quest 3 and the quest 3 do not quite correspond to the remarkable success of the very popular meta quest 2, they are always doing well for themselves – by the success of the Christmas day of the Meta Quest application Phone and the growing popularity of the quest 3 in the steam material survey (it represents up to 20.14% of all the helmets used, behind the quest 2 to 34.21%).
What is more interesting is that a meta Quest Pro 2 could be on the way. Gurman does not enter into details but says that Meta works on “a new high-end model that could possibly become a successor to the Quest Pro Mixed-Reality helmet”. We do not know much else, but Gurman could refer to a previously teasing meta prototype which was potentially defined to replace the two cancelled prototypes which we had heard of: Puffin.
For the context, in July 2023, we pointed out that the Meta Quest Pro 2 had been canceled – or, more specifically, that the prototype that many thought they would become the pro 2 quest (to use the semantic language of Meta) had been put foot. Things calmed down until 2024, when in February, there was buzz that Meta and LG could associate on a high -end helmet with OLED screens to compete with Apple Vision Pro. However, our initial excitement turned into disappointment fairly quickly.
In May, it was a question that the LG partnership was deactivated, followed by reports in August that the OLED Quest Pro 2 project – the code name La Jolla – had given a kick to the bucket. Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth again said that technically, the Pro 2 quest was not canceled, just a prototype, but that did not dispense the feeling that the Pro Lible was condemned.
It is until we have heard of Puffin, a third prototype of XR device, to which Gurman could refer in his report. Puffin was disclosed in 2024 when we heard of the cancellation of the Jolla, and it offers us a completely different concept for a helmet – a light glasses appearance (110g) for VR and MR rather than Like other specifications.
What I like in the puff of puffing is that he plays in Meta’s promise to what his extension should be – a look at XR’s future.
Although I like VR helmets, the clear trend in the industry is that glasses are the next step in the evolution of this field – even if, at the beginning, they will be less able to take into account weight restrictions and of size. Puffin, with a design that does not try to be like regular glasses – and could therefore get away with design decisions like putting a drum washer in your pocket like the Apple Vision Pro or having a more framework Voluminous – could focus on fashion function, and maintenance with the promise of Quest Pro shows us where accessible XR technology could be in a few years by giving us an overview via a prosumer product that will not be the cheapest.
We will obviously have to wait and see what Meta has in his sleeve, because it could be that Puffin and The Quest Pro 2 are distinct gadgets, but seriously I hope that they are not. Although I liked the original launch quest, she did not get the software support which he wanted and ended up being too commonplace of an upgrade – which resulted in overlapping too quickly.
Puffin looks like a much more engaging proposal with a unique design that could give the pro 2 quest the power of stay which he desperately needs.
