- Meta AI now translates, dubs and syncs reels in English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese.
- New tool lets creators reach new audiences without location tools
- Viewers control language settings, with labels for translated reels
Meta just made the Reels speak in your language, even though they started in a different language. The company deployed Meta AI to translate, dub and sync Reels on Facebook and Instagram in English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese.
So you could watch a cooking guide filmed in Brazil as if it were recorded in your own kitchen, or an English translation of the lyrics played during a dance video filmed in Delhi. Meta AI can mimic a creator’s tone, cadence, and voice in another language, with optional lip syncing to add a layer of realism that even big-budget content struggled with.
You may not be able to do the same thing with your own videos unless you’ve gone slightly viral yourself. The translation tools are free for creators on Facebook with at least 1,000 followers and for all public Instagram accounts in countries where Meta AI is available. Meta says the idea is to make short-form content more accessible and enjoyable across cultures.
International Reels
And while Meta AI-translated Reels are clearly labeled, so you don’t mistake a dubbed voice for the original, viewers can also turn off translations, turn off lip-syncing, or stick to the video’s original language if they prefer.
This is not the first time that Meta has attempted to cross linguistic boundaries. Automatic captions, captioned stories, and global hashtag campaigns have been around for years. But this is the first time the company has relied on AI for voice cloning and lip movement matching.
This also gives Meta an advantage as the world of AI-created and AI-assisted videos explodes. YouTube has long offered subtitles and subtitles, but real-time voice dubbing with lip syncing is not yet widely available there. TikTok has experimented with translation overlays, but not full voice cloning or lip syncing. If Meta can achieve this seamlessly in more languages, it could become the gold standard for international content.
So if it seems like a lot of Latin American and Indian creators who are fluent in English are showing up on your Reels, that could be due to AI’s help with translation. You’ll need to look for the “Translated with Meta AI” label in the corner, to be sure.
