Former First Lady Michelle Obama weighed on the rivalry of the WNBA between Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese for the first time.
During an appearance on the podcast “All the Smoke With Matt Barnes & Stephen Jackson”, Obama spoke during a group discussion on the impact of the Clark-Reese drama on the popularity of the WNBA, the impact on the well-being of the players and the “hatred” involved.

“I think that the difficult thing is the element of social media. But it is true in all areas. I mean, we have talked about it in our program; it just takes a normal event. These young children today, what they have to live, what they must be able to resist, because social media is a large part of the world,” said Obama.
“There is hatred. But now hatred is in your room, on your phone, with you all the time. And you cannot, for any reason, tell these children to turn it off, because they earn their lives in this way. I mean, now they should stay engaged. So, I think it is even more difficult.

The rivalry between Clark and Reese was renewed in their first match of the 2025 season on May 17. Clark’s fever in Indiana defeated Reese’s Chicago Sky 93-58, and Clark was called to a blatant fault after a defensive game against Reese.
The WNBA announced after the match that it would launch an investigation into alleged “racist” comments intended for Reese, but could not support the allegations.
The two have not played since this match on May 17, because the two treated injuries throughout the season.

Meanwhile, Obama recently made the headlines with another opinion related to sport, when she compared ESPN to reality TV during an episode of her brother’s podcast “IMO” in July.
“This is a sociological study. They think that sport is a better reality TV, I say to myself:” It’s the same thing. “If I listen to ESPN for an hour, it’s like watching the” Real Housewives of Atlanta “, you know? Said Obama.” It’s the same drama, and they cry out, and they don’t get along, you know? I mean, Stephen A. Smith, he’s like everyone else … “
