- Microsoft will automatically install the COPILOT application on your laptop soon
- EEE users are protected from automatic installation
- The Copilot application is only a renamed Microsoft 365 application
Microsoft has confirmed that it would automatically start installing the Microsoft 365 Copilot application on Windows devices with Microsoft 365 desktop customs from October 2025.
However, recent EU decisions have influenced Microsoft’s decision to automatically install the AI application, as EEE devices will not receive automatic installation.
Redmond frames the COPILOT application as a centralized entry point to Genai’s experiences through Word, Excel, PowerPoint and more, but many users will not be satisfied with the update.
Microsoft pushes you more
Users have already visited the Internet to complain about Microsoft’s invasive approach to push its AI tools – installing a whole new application that appears in the Windows start menu and is activated by default could be the final straw for many.
Administrators can withdraw via the administration center for Microsoft 365 applications, but the opt-in-by-decault approach could be an unwanted decision.
Earlier in 2025, a separate parameter was added to allow administrators to pin the Copilot application in the Windows taskbar.
However, although the Microsoft AI push is obvious, it is not an entirely new application. Instead, the company explained in an assistance page that the Microsoft 365 (Office) application was simply renamed Microsoft 365 Copilot.
“The application remains your starting point to find, create, share and collaborate in one place with access to your favorite productivity applications,” wrote Microsoft.
“This update represents the additional means of working with Copilot for tasks such as asking questions, creating content, writing documents and creating agents with a working account.”
All this comes while the technology giant continues to fight with the adoption of Windows 11. Its latest operating system finally reached almost its place with Windows 10 in June 2025, before exceeding it in July. Since then, the two have come closer again, which could indicate some downgrades.
