- This is the “first” connection restoration experience for Windows Backup for Organizations
- It covers Windows settings and Microsoft Store apps
- It also covers even more device types
Microsoft announced the general availability of the first Login Restore experience as part of Windows Backup for Organizations, which will allow users to more quickly restore Windows settings and their Microsoft Store apps.
The new option appears upon first login on a new or re-imaged Windows 11 device, allowing users to quickly access previous configurations simply by logging in.
Since this is a login restore experience, it is only available at login time, so if users choose to skip the OOBE restore option, they will no longer be prompted, Microsoft confirmed in a blog post.
Windows Backup for Organizations
While this feature was previously available for Entra-joined devices, the update now means it is also available for hybrid Entra-joined devices, hybrid managed environments, multi-user devices, and Windows 365 Cloud PCs.
Microsoft considers “reducing downtime and accelerating productivity” as the two main benefits of the update: in short, it makes it easier to recover personal configurations and reduces the friction typically associated with installing backups.
This is the perfect update for organizations still migrating to Windows 11, speeding up the time it takes to get users back in their place. But the new backup tool is also a nice update for businesses with frequent hardware refresh cycles or those using Cloud PCs.
However, this has been a long time coming, first revealed during Microsoft Ignite in 2024. At the time, Windows 10’s market share was still 62%, with Windows 11’s at 35%. Imagine all the businesses that could have benefited from the connection restoration experience back then.
