- Build 2025 was all about AI, but Microsoft also made the open source WSL
- The company knows how precious its community has been
- Microsoft wants users “get involved in problem solving and learn together as a community”
Microsoft officially has a Windows Open Windows Opening subsystem for its annual software engineer and web developer conference, Microsoft Build 2025.
Most components are now open-source, with the exception of a few elements linked directly to Windows, with the source code available on Github.
By WSL à Open Source, Microsoft opened it to direct contributions, the development of features and biller corrections in the larger community, after recognizing that the community has already contributed considerably before its open supply.
“While the community behind WSL grew up, WSL has won more features such as GPU support, management of graphic applications (via WSLG) and systemd management,” said Pierre Boulay de Microsoft. “It has finally become clear that to follow the growing community and features requests, WSL had to move faster and ship separately from the Windows.”
Boulay shared part of the history of WSL, including its separation from Windows in 2021 when it became its own package, distributed via the Microsoft Store.
“WSL could never have been what it is today without its community. Even without access to the WSL source code, people were able to make major contributions that lead to what WSL is now,” added Boulay.
Despite the importance of the WSL becoming open-source, the director of communications Frank X Shaw wrote only a short note on this subject in the Book of News of the Conference. An extract reads as follows: “It facilitates collaboration between WSL users, allowing them to engage in problem solving and learning together as a community.”
Unsurprisingly, the basic buildings of builds have focused on artificial intelligence, with many updates to the company’s co -pilot agents to stimulate productivity between Microsoft 365 applications.
