Microsoft has released another Insider Preview build for Windows 11, and among the notable updates here we have an Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE) that runs on the operating system on laptops, desktops, and tablets.
FSE is coming to Windows 11 computers at the same time as it is available to all Windows 11 handhelds, as we reported yesterday. This essentially makes these devices, as well as the Windows 11 operating system, much easier to use with an Xbox game controller.
“Designed for console-style navigation, the Xbox full-screen experience provides a clear, distraction-free interface for gaming with a controller,” Microsoft says. “Pair a controller with your PC for seamless task switching and a simplified gaming experience on your desktop, laptop or tablet.”
In particular, it makes it easier to navigate a library of games with a controller instead of a mouse or keyboard. The FSE also manages system resources to free up RAM and make more memory available for playing your games.
How to access it
If you’re using Windows Insider Preview Build on the Dev or Beta channels, or if you’re using the Xbox Insider program, you can start testing the FSE. It is available through the task view, through the game bar settings or by pressing the button Win+F11 keyboard shortcut.
“Once you enter the Xbox full-screen experience, you will see the Xbox home screen and be able to access your games, including Xbox, Game Pass, Xbox Play Anywhere, and your installed games from other popular storefronts,” Microsoft explains in one of its blog posts. A long press on the Xbox button lets you switch between apps and games.
Pressing the Windows key returns you to normal operations, or you can cycle through the Task View or Game Bar settings again. Microsoft says the rollout is happening in stages, so not everyone will see it right away.
From what we know so far, it also seems likely that the next-gen Xbox PC will be built around the FSE – essentially making it a Windows 11 PC with a library of Xbox games – and that’s another reason why Microsoft will want to test it on as many computers as possible.
