- The Microsoft Copilot server on Discord has experienced some censorship
- Messages mentioning “Microslop” have been blocked
- Microsoft has reportedly taken other steps, including limiting or locking multiple channels.
If Microsoft was hoping that the unfortunate nickname given to the company earlier this year would go away, that’s not the case – and another incident is unlikely to make things right.
Windows Latest reports that the official Microsoft Copilot server on Discord has implemented a block on posts mentioning “Microslop”, the nickname that the Microsoft CEO accidentally brought to life with a comment about AI in early January 2026.
The tech site is a member of this Discord community and found that using the word in a post meant the message was blocked. As Windows Latest shows in a video, they received a notification from server moderators that the post was blocked due to an “inappropriate phrase.”
As moderation is carried out via a simple keyword filter, however, it was quite easy to evade. Windows Latest observed that it was enough to change “Microslop” to “Micr0slop” – replacing the letter with the number zero – for your message to be published and obviously retain its full meaning.
A group of people coining variations of the nickname, and apparently this caused Microsoft administrative staff to restrict parts of the server, apparently locking down several channels or throttling them. Windows Latest says posting permissions were also disabled for many offenders and message history was hidden.
As of today, the tech site notes: “Several channels are showing limited visibility or locked states, indicating that the server was effectively put into containment mode as moderators attempted to regain control of the conversation.”
Analysis: discordant times
Presumably, these “containment” measures will be temporary, but this is a fairly draconian position on the part of Microsoft. Okay, that’s fair enough – this is the official Microsoft Copilot space on Discord, and the company has the right to maintain an appropriate tone for discussions there. Undoubtedly, Microsoft wants to run a constructive forum and believes that throwing insults like “Microslop” is neither appropriate nor helpful.
I understand that, but at the same time the response of a relatively heavy level of censorship that seems to have been put in place is just not good to see. Even if Microsoft has the right to do this on these channels, the firm’s moderators risk making a bad situation worse.
As you can see from the Windows Latest post
Some people on this thread on X are already inventing alternative nicknames to “Microslop”, like “Slopilot”, for example. This is actually a double dig at Microsoft, with not only a “slop” reference, but also an alternative “slow” meaning that could be read here.
As one X user said: “If they degrade themselves to the point of banning words, it’s the beginning of the end. You tell the Internet not to use Microslop, they will elevate you with Slopilot.”
Microsoft is trying to repair its reputation and is rumored to “reevaluate its AI strategy on Windows 11” and refocus on fixing the operating system’s basics – but episodes like this won’t help that effort.
