- Microsoft engineers undertake to make the open source of Winui
- But first, it must be separated from the owner Windows code
- Github will become Winui’s home for the community
Microsoft has confirmed that Winui will become, “really open source”, but the deep tangles with the owner Windows code could still put this goal away.
The Windows user interface library (Winui) is a user interface frame for the creation of modern, fluid and reactive user interfaces on Windows, which works with WIN32, .NET and C ++ applications.
However, although the project does not have a specific end date, the main software engineer Beth Pan shared more details on the gradual levels of Microsoft in a Github article.
Winui is on a road to become completely open source
“Although we are not ready to commit to a specific end date to complete all the steps, we are working on it,” wrote Pan.
The four phases of Microsoft’s plan begin with a more frequent synchronization of internal commits in Github, starting the post-Wasdk 1.8 which is defined for a version of August 2025.
From there, Microsoft will allow external developers to clone and build the deposit with complete configuration documents, after which third -party developers will be authorized to contribute and perform tests.
The last step will see that Github will become the “main place for development, monitoring of problems and community engagement”.
However, because a large part of the code base affects owners Windows layers, Microsoft plans a progressive and deliberate transition to separate what can be open-source.
“Our current objective is to focus on fundamental work that unlock the value of contributors and increase transparency,” added Pan.
A board of directors of Github Project has been established for the community to collaborate with Microsoft in the future.
Community responses were generally positive and united, many expressing their satisfaction that the project continues with the support of Microsoft.
