- Connections using the remote office application will be locked from May 27
- The new Windows application takes its place, but there are already known problems
- You will have to manually uninstall the old application and install the new
Senior Product Manager Microsoft, Hilary Braun, has confirmed that the company will delete the care of the bureau’s application from May 27, 2025.
The services will live, but the application will be replaced by the Windows application, described as a new unified gateway for remote connections.
Continuous access to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Dev Box will force users to go to the new application, which has a large range on several platforms.
The remote desktop application is replaced by the Windows application
Microsoft’s assistance page confirms that the Windows application will operate between Windows and MacOS desktop computers, mobile devices and iOS / iPados web browsers. It is also available in preview for Android, Chromeos and Meta Quest Devices.
Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Microsoft Dev Box, Remote Desktop Services and Remote PC Services are all managed via the updated application, but there are limited features for remote desktop and PC services on Windows devices and web browsers, depending on the assistance article.
However, the transition seems to be almost smooth. Braun has advised users demanding access to the remote desktop application which will soon be obsolete to use the remote desktop connection “until the support for this type of connection is available in the Windows application”.
Redmond has also published a list of problems and limitations known for the Windows application.
The uninstalling the remote office application follows the same process as the deletion of other applications. Like this application, the Windows application can be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.
In addition to the transition between the two, Braun also reminded companies to update their internal resources such as user advice, assistance office documentation and administrative equipment to reflect changes and make the change smoother for employees and users.
In the meantime, customers have a little more than two weeks before connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop and Microsoft Def Box via the remote desktop application are blocked.
