- The authorization to build a data center in the hertfordshire has been approved
- The owner is likely to be a hyperscaller operator, although the application has been carried out by an obscure company
- It should draw 400 MVA from the national grid when it is online in 2030
Who doesn’t like a good whodunnit? The approval has been granted for a large data center to be built in Hertfordshire, in the United Kingdom, near the London M25 motorway, but the identity of the future occupant, considered as a major hyperscal operator ( So potentially AWS, Microsoft, Google or Meta), the East, IS is still unknown.
The planning request was submitted last year by DC01 UK LTD, and approved by the hertsmere Borough coucil shortly after the British government’s launch of its AIA action plan, for which new centers IA data will play a major role.
Following the news, a spokesperson for DC01UK said: “We would like to thank the Hertsmere Borough Council for their open and pragmatic approach to DC01UK plans. They understand our ambition for the project and the borough. This will bring enormous advantages for the local population thanks to a stronger local economy, more qualified jobs and better opportunities. Our plans also include a series of upgrades for local transport, including new and existing bus routes, the expansion of the local cycle rental program and road improvements. »»
Operational by 2030
DC01UK will be the largest data center in clouds and Europe AI, with up to two million square feet of space, and will draw 400 MVA (megavolt-up) of the power of the national network, this which is enough electricity to supply 20,000 houses. 400mva is the total power provided, including real power (MW) and reactive power (MVAR, which explains the ineffectures in the system). The location of the project, which is just in the east of South Mimms services, places it near the Elstree sub-station (LeTchmore Heath).
DC01UK claims that “economic projections estimate the construction value of the project at 3.75 billion pounds sterling with a generation all year round of 21.4 million pounds sterling in commercial prices once the operational data center. The positive economic impact of the data center would also see the creation of 500 qualified on-site jobs during the construction phase, 200 permanent and qualified jobs once operational and 13,740 other indirect jobs, 10,900 of which would be in the South-East . DC01UK should also generate approximately 1.1 billion pounds sterling per year GVA (gross value added) indirectly per year. »»
The data center will be built in 85 acres of land (including DC01UK, according to DC01UK, will be kept as a green space) with the construction planned to start in 2027. The data center should become operational three years later in 2030.
Who could this hyperscaller be? The register A DC01UK spokesperson has been informed: “Since the announcement last September, we have received significant interest and there have been active and current discussions which will be finalized in the near future. We will make another announcement in time wanted to “suggest that DC01UK does not know who will move into its data center.
