- Report Reveals 82% of Sports Organizations Currently Deploying AI
- Almost all plan to increase their investments over the next 12 months
- More sport-specific technologies are needed to achieve goals
The vast majority of sports organizations are poised to increase the use of AI tools in the future, as the demand for greater technological innovation shows no signs of slowing, according to a new study.
A study published by SportsPro and Sportradar Group AG reveals that while more than 80% of sports organizations are currently deploying AI to facilitate their operations, almost two-thirds believe more sports-specific technologies are needed to achieve their business goals.
Almost all (98%) of organizations said they plan to increase their use of AI over the next 12 months, while 72% see AI as the technology with the greatest potential for their organization over the next five years.
AI sports revolution
When it comes to specific technologies and areas of focus, more than half (57%) said improved 5G and Wi-Fi connectivity have the most potential to transform the on-premises experience, and more than three-quarters (78%) say advanced data analytics will have the most significant impact on the playing field over the next five years.
But some concerns were raised: While 80% of respondents believe the tech industry is currently well-equipped to serve sports, nearly two-thirds (63%) said they believe more sports-specific technology is needed to achieve future goals.
“Modern technologies have revolutionized virtually every aspect of sport, transforming the way it is played, organized and consumed at every level,” said the report’s lead author, Steve McCaskill.
“Sports’ adoption of scientific knowledge, data analytics and increasingly capable hardware and software has redefined the boundaries of sports performance, reinvented the fan experience and unleashed new efficiencies and revenue streams that have accelerated growth off the field of play.
“The next stage of the great digital transformation of sport will be defined by AI, while advances in mobile technology and more affordable solutions will have a dramatic democratizing effect, bringing the sporting and commercial benefits of this revolution to millions more people around the world.”
