Sudden floods struck the Roshan valley in the Ghizer de Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) district early Friday after a gust of glacier, damaging more than 100 houses and forcing hundreds of families to flee, officials said.
Ghizer, about 200 km from GB, was one of the most affected valleys of recent floods, with at least 10 reported deaths.
The torrential rains last month in GB sparked sudden floods and landslides, leaving more than 200 tourists and blocked travelers.
At least five people, including four tourists and a local resident, lost their lives. The authorities declared 14 to 15 major road blockages caused by rocks, debris and sudden floods, reducing access to key routes such as Babusar Top and parts of the Karakoram motorway in Lal Parhi and Tatta Pani, where several vehicles have been trapped.
The Pakistani army has deployed helicopters to evacuate those trapped in isolated areas, while heavy machines have been used to clear sections from the road from Thaichi to Chilas, with clearance operations continuing in Tatta Pani and Jalipur.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has also announced a 4 billion rupee backup package for the GB region affected by floods, as well as plans for a 100 megawatts solar project.

The spokesman confirmed that all the blocked people had been saved, but “hundreds have already been moved and move with their property in safer areas”.
He added that government teams carry out rescue operations in the region.
Rescue officials 1122 warned against an artificial dam created in Roshan, saying that if it bursts, the Ghizer river could trigger floods in low parts of the city of Gilgit.

Officials added that the announcements of the Mosque and Imambargah are made to alert people to the precautionary evacuation. The emergency service stressed that these measures were taken “to reduce possible losses in the event of an unfortunate situation”.
The GB chief minister Haji Gulbar Khan visited the affected areas to examine the rescue operations, accompanied by the engineer of the provincial ministers Mohammad Anwar and Rahmat Khaliq, the Nazir president Advocate and the legislator Nawaz Naji. The sub-commissioner Ghizer informed the chief minister of losses suffered by the local communities.
The CM has ordered the immediate evacuation of the areas struck by the floods to safer places and ordering officials to provide help and medical aid. He also thanked Commander FCNA for quickly launching a rescue operation.

In addition, more than 700 people have been killed and nearly 1,000 injured in incidents related to monsoon across the country since June 26, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
