- Most business owners think their employees would be victims of a phishing attack.
- Workers commonly reuse work passwords for their personal accounts
- AI scams and deepfakes are growing concerns
New data from Vodafone Business has revealed that more than 10% of UK organizations are unlikely to survive if hit by a cyber attack. While this may seem like a pretty weak promotion on its own, it comes against a backdrop of evolving attacks and poor cybersecurity practices.
Nearly two-thirds (63%) believe the risk of cyberattacks at their company has increased over the past year, and most executives (71%) believe at least one of their employees would likely be the victim of a phishing attack.
However, even though we are in an era of rapidly evolving threats, the report indicates that some basic cybersecurity measures can still be used to protect businesses.
UK businesses remain at risk of cyberattacks
One of these practices is to use strong and unique passwords. The study found that staff also reuse work passwords across up to 11 personal accounts, making a single breach much more devastating.
And when it comes to the current situation in the UK, not even half (45%) have ensured that all staff have completed basic cybersecurity awareness training.
But change may be on the horizon, with 89% of respondents saying last year’s high-profile attacks (such as those on M&S and Jaguar Land Rover) have made them more alert.
There is also growing awareness of AI-related scams and deepfakes, with 70% now more suspicious of video calls claiming to be from senior executives.
“Many steps – such as avoiding password reuse and improving staff training – are relatively simple to implement,” wrote Nick Gliddon, VodafoneThree’s chief commercial officer.
The UK government will also launch a second Telecommunications Fraud Charter later this year, hoping to strengthen the UK’s defense against sophisticated cybercrime.
