- Motorola revealed the Moto X70 Air
- It’s an ultra-thin phone that will rival the iPhone Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge
- The phone measures less than 6mm and is expected to launch in Europe as Edge 70.
Motorola has revealed the Moto X70 Air, an ultra-thin phone clearly designed to compete with the iPhone Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge.
According to The Verge, the phone is less than 6mm thick, although we don’t have exact measurements at the time of writing. It wouldn’t be the thinnest smartphone Motorola has ever made. The Moto Z, a modular phone launched in 2017, measured 5.19mm thick without any accessories.
The phone is expected to arrive in Europe as the Motorola Edge 70, but we don’t yet know which countries that includes.
Motorola’s website says “something new is coming” on November 5, but we’re not sure if that’s a release date or just the announcement date of the new phone. The website also contains a quiz to access a pre-launch offer
In addition to an ultra-slim design and a 6.7-inch screen, the X70 Air comes with an impressively sized battery. Motorola has equipped the phone with a 4,800mAh battery, which is not far from the battery capacity of a typical large flagship like the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
For comparison, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge sports a 3,800 mAh cell, while GSMArena lists the iPhone Air’s battery capacity as 3,149 mAh. The X70 Air beat both by some margin.
Based on Motorola’s renders, it appears that the phone has three lenses, but one of them is grayed out. To me, this suggests that the phone will come with two full-fledged cameras and an additional depth or color sensor. The square camera body is complemented by a flash module.
The phone is also IP68 and IP69 water and dust rated, meaning it is resistant to immersion and dust.
We don’t have pricing for the Motorola X70 Air/Edge 70 at the time of writing, but whatever the cost, I think it’s a very significant development for the phone industry as a whole – let me explain.
Atmospheric pressure
Earlier this year, I wrote that the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge could usher in a new era of thin and light phones, allowing powerful high-end Pro phones to transform into more capable devices without much attention paid to ergonomics.
It seems Apple engineers were on the same page, because that’s exactly what we saw with the new iPhone 17 lineup: the new slim iPhone Air and the new iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max with huge camera “decks.”
But experiments from the tech industry’s best aren’t enough to change the way we use technology every day: these new product ideas need to trickle down to niche, accessible brands in order to gain a proper foothold.
That’s why the Motorola X70 Air is such an exciting prospect: to me, it suggests that the rest of the phone industry is waking up to the possibilities and portability that ultra-thin phones offer. If so, I would expect to see slim phones from other phone makers over the next year, due to pressure from both the high-end and mid-range of the industry.
In the meantime, our review of the iPhone Air and the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge give a glimpse of what using a thin phone is really like. Be sure to let us know what you think of the Motorola X70 Air in the comments below.
