- GrapheneOS architecture limits attack surfaces and automatically restricts data access in the background
- Motorola to combine ThinkShield protections with GrapheneOS to strengthen smartphone security
- The Google Pixel series currently remains the only officially supported hardware for GrapheneOS
Motorola announced a new partnership with the GrapheneOS Foundation to explore a more secure approach to Android for professional smartphones.
GrapheneOS is a privacy-focused operating system built on the Android Open Source Project.
Its architecture limits attack surfaces and restricts access to background data, making it attractive to organizations managing sensitive information.
GrapheneOS reduces vulnerabilities
Combining this with Motorola’s existing security expertise and Lenovo’s ThinkShield protections, the partnership promises a foundation for smartphones designed from the ground up to resist attacks while remaining practical for enterprise use.
“We are excited to partner with Motorola to bring GrapheneOS’ cutting-edge mobile operating system, focused on privacy and security, to its next-generation smartphone,” said a GrapheneOS spokesperson.
“This collaboration marks an important step in expanding the reach of GrapheneOS, and we congratulate Motorola on taking this step toward advancing mobile security.”
Despite this optimism, Google Pixel devices remain the only officially supported hardware for GrapheneOS, and none of these phones are currently considered enterprise-grade.
This is a technical gap that Motorola hopes to fill before offering professional smartphones capable of running the beefed-up operating system.
Despite the announcement, Motorola indicated that devices running GrapheneOS would not appear in the immediate future.
The collaboration is based on strong research and development activity, with joint work on software enhancements, security technologies and operational integration continuing behind the scenes.
For organizations looking for ready-to-deploy solutions, this means the benefits of the partnership will take time to materialize into actual hardware.
GrapheneOS is still a work in progress and recently requested more dedicated servers of 10 Gbps or higher to host updates to its operating system and applications in Europe.
Mullvad.net has already offered to sponsor these servers, which could help support future enterprise deployments of GrapheneOS-powered devices.
Alongside the GrapheneOS collaboration, Motorola is expanding its business tools with Moto Analytics and Moto Secure.
Moto Analytics provides IT administrators with detailed operational visibility across fleets, from application stability to battery health and connectivity performance, enabling business teams to proactively resolve issues, improve availability, and maintain employee productivity without relying solely on traditional device management tools.
Moto Secure also receives an update via Private Image Data, which automatically removes sensitive metadata from photos.
By erasing location and device information while preserving the image itself, this feature enhances privacy during everyday device use.
