I fell in love with a new game called Linked to the rift. It’s a spin-off of the card game League of Legendsand it’s absolutely fantastic – you can check out a much longer article on my Linked to the rift obsession for more details, and to discover why this could be the TCG everyone has been waiting for.
Here, I instead want to talk about the best way to experience the new game: Proving Grounds. This Meets Board Game Starter Kit comes with four rock-solid pre-made decks, featured by popular characters. League champions (Annie, Garen, Lux and Master Yi). It includes cardboard playmats to help you organize your games, giant Battlefield maps to fight over, and plastic game pieces so you can keep track of your points.
I’ve played it with two and four players, with players who are TCG aficionados and people who aren’t, and every match has been great. People can pick up the rules quickly, and with multiple players, there’s plenty of room to form temporary alliances in a more effective way than I’ve felt with other TCG multiplayer formats (I’m thinking especially of Magic: The Gathering Commander)
It’s reasonably priced initially at $29.99 / £29.99 / AU$59.99, but there’s a catch: you won’t find it anywhere at that price. Neither in the official Riot store, nor anywhere else.
As you would expect from a card game based on one of the world’s most popular gaming franchises – with both the immensely popular MOBA, several blockbuster spin-offs and the phenomenal Esoteric Netflix series – Linked to the rift is selling like hot cakes and in many places it is sold out or offered at a hugely inflated price.
There is some good news, however, with Riot announcing that it is aware of the issues and has several plans to try to rectify them, including restocks, reprints, and “programs” to “incentivize partners and provide rewards for their engagement in player-focused behavior, including reasonable pricing.”
This includes new stock, which Riot says will “arrive in local game stores by the end of the year.”
So this Black Friday and as we head into the holiday season, I know what I’m going to be looking for: more Linked to the rift packs, and you should definitely have the game (especially the Proving Grounds box set) on your radar.
