A mysterious drone was detected Monday near one of the most important military bases in the United States, prompting authorities to issue a terrorist alert.
Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, is home to America’s most powerful war machine, B-52 bombers capable of launching nuclear strikes around the world, approached by a mysterious remote-controlled drone Monday morning.
The unmanned aerial vehicle was detected and officials raised the force protection condition (FPCON) level to “Charlie,” meaning a possible threat was detected.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East after the United States and Israel launched joint military strikes against Iran, killing more than 1,000 people, including Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Iran uses drones and Shahed “kamikaze” missiles to target US military bases in the region.
The incident remains under investigation and the location of the drone remains unclear. Officials did not disclose whether the drone had been captured.
Addressing the Daily mail, A Barksdale AFB spokesperson said it is a crime under state and federal law to fly an unauthorized drone over a military installation.
He warned that such actions could result in “significant fines and imprisonment.”
B-52 bombers are one of the most advanced U.S. military aircraft, capable of reaching 8,800 miles without the need to refuel.
These aircraft can carry up to 70,000 pounds of warheads (both conventional and nuclear) to strike enemy targets.
