Shane Van Gisbergen won his first victory for the Nascar Cup Series season while the master of the road class racing went to Victory Lane in Mexico City.

It was almost a disastrous Sunday for the native of New Zealand. While he was exceeding Christopher Bell by 16.567 seconds, he opened the “nauseating” feeling that tormented him all day.

“I tried to treat it as when I go to Asia, I just drink bottled water and pay attention to the shower and brush my teeth with bottled water, but I just got off,” he said. “I couldn’t keep anything right. Everything just went directly through me. I really felt uncomfortable, and my mind was there, but my body had so much pressure in my stomach. A crazy weekend and everyone was deeply dug.”

It seemed to be a difficult week overall, which started with a mechanical problem on the charter flight of his team which interrupted his first trip to Mexico. He was sleeping on his carrier’s floor before the race, not knowing if he could compete in Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.

Whatever the disease, Van Gisbergen still managed to lead 60 of the 100 laps. The victory gives him the hope that he could earn a place in the Nascar qualifiers.

“It means everything for us, that’s why I’m here,” said Van Gisbergen. “I’m better and more competitive. We are really making a lot of progress.”

The next race on the Nascar Cup Series calendar is Pocono.

Van Gisbergen will enter the 30th race in the classification, but the victory in Mexico City will go a long way as long as 17 different drivers will not win races from now on.
