Nationalists, intellectuals reject six aquatic channels

The six water canals under construction on the river will not only destroy agriculture in Sindh, but also went to urban areas, including Karachi.

At the Sindh Unity conference organized by Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) at Karachi Press Club on Thursday, the speakers demanded the government to allow the legitimate part of the Sindh water. “It is not only for our agriculture, but we will not have drinking water,” said Riaz Chandio de JSM.

“Residents of urban areas believe that the construction of six channels on the river is a problem purely linked to rural areas,” he said. But, he added, people living the urban areas of Sindh, in particular in Hyderabad and Karachi, will be more confronted with the consequences than those that live in distant areas. He called on karachites to take collective measures against the project.

Rejection The six channels he strongly demanded from the government that the Sindh had to receive his share of water maturity in accordance with the 1991 water agreement.

Participants urged the United Nations to recognize the Indus river as a living entity, similar to the Magpie River in Canada and other protected rivers in the world.

In the resolution adopted by the participants of the conference, they condemned the actions of reprisal of the government led by the PPP and asked for the immediate release of Ghulam Murtaza Jatoi.

The conference was followed by Dr. Safdar Abbasi, Sardar Abdul Rahim, Husnain Mirza, Noor-Ul-Huda Shah, Dr Kaiser Bengali, Syed Khuda Dino Shah, Manzoor Mirani, Shahab Osto, Dr Ali Hassan Bhutto, Aamir Fayaz Warraich, Naeem Qureshi Advocate and others.

The conference also held responsible the provincial and federal governments for the increase in road accidents. They also condemned recent accidents in the city, demanding a repression against the dumper’s mafia.

The participants also discussed the situation of the public order in force in the divisions of Sukkur and Larkana, affecting hundreds of people.
