Leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) have urged United States President Donald Trump to reconsider his decision to suspend sanctions on Russian oil imports. They warned that the decision would have repercussions on the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
The leaders of Canada, Germany and Norway expressed concerns over the decision and said they would use their communications channels at the White House to try to change the US president’s mind.
Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said six of the seven G7 countries were against the US waiver of sanctions on Russian oil. He said: “We were a little surprised when we learned this morning that the US government had decided to lift sanctions against Russia. »
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said: “We all have direct lines to the president and we will use them. »
Merz also announced his intention to communicate with French President Emmanuel Macron to find a way to circumvent the US president’s plan.
Previously, the US government lifted sanctions on Russian oil imports amid the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and its attacks on American military bases in Gulf countries have virtually stopped oil production.
President Trump authorized countries to buy Russian oil in an effort to increase global supply amid a shortage and soaring fuel prices, sparked by joint U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran and the Islamic Republic’s subsequent retaliation.
