The New York Knicks managed to escape with a 113-111 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night as controversy heated up over a questionable offensive foul in the final moments.

Mavericks point guard Brandon Williams received the ball at half court with about 3 seconds left. He was driving toward the basket with Knicks guard Landry Shamet on his hip. He managed to get around Shamet and make what the crowd thought was the tying basket plus the foul.

However, the foul that was called concerned Williams. The NBA official said Williams put his arm around the Knicks defender as he drove toward the basket. A replay of the moment showed Williams’ left arm around Shamet’s waist.

Either way, NBA fans wondered if it was the right decision.

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was asked what he saw on the final play.

“Great execution. Great catch. Great pass (Dereck Lively II),” Kidd said. “Great execution. Tough call. He saw it well. They called a foul.”

Knicks star Jalen Brunson returned to the court and scored 28 points against his former team. He missed the last two games with a sprained ankle.

“Chaos,” Brunson said. “At the same time, I found a way to win. It was ugly. When you win ugly, that’s the sign of a team that’s learning and improving. No matter what the situation is, we have to find a way to win.”

Knicks center Karl-Anthony Towns added 18 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Mikal Bridges and Josh Hart each scored 16 points. New York improved to 9-5 with the win.

Mavericks forward Naji Marshall led the team with 23 points coming off the bench. Max Christie added 15 and Klay Thompson scored 13.
