Nepal has raised a ban on social media following demonstrations that led to 19 people, a Minister of the Government announced on Tuesday.
The government had dismissed the prohibition of social media imposed last week, said the firm spokesman and the Minister of Communications and Information Technologies, Prithvi Subba Gurung.
The decision occurred after 19 people were killed and more than 100 were injured during the “Gen Z” demonstrations Monday against generalized corruption. The demonstrations were triggered by the ban.
“We have removed the closure of social media. They are working now,” said Gurung Reuters.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli said he was saddened by incidents of violence due to “the infiltration of various selfish centers”.
The government would pay reparation for families in the dead and provide free treatment to the injured, he added.
“An investigation committee will be set up to discover the causes, assess the losses and suggest measures within 15 days to ensure that these incidents are not repeated in the future,” Oli said in a night at the end of the night on Monday.
The organizers of the demonstrations, which have spread to other cities of the Himalayan country, called them “demonstrations by Gen Z.” They say that the demonstrations reflect the widespread frustration of young people in the face of government’s lack of action perceived to combat corruption and stimulate economic opportunities.
Last week, the government decided to block access to several social media platforms, including Facebook, a decision that fueled the anger of young people.
The officials say that the closure concerned the social media platforms which had not succeeded in registering with the government, in the midst of a repression against the false identity documents, the disinformation and the speech of hatred.
