- Netflix has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed started filming in Rome
- However, some fans have expressed concerns about the show’s location and original story.
- This news comes after the main cast of the series was confirmed.
Filming has started on Netflix Assassin’s Creed series, following a recent casting announcement that has me feeling optimistic about things.
In a social media post, further castings were released alongside an announcement that production had begun in Rome, with production primarily filming at the famous Cinecittà Studios.
We’ve known for a while that the series will follow an original story, instead of adapting the events of the first game, but not everyone is happy with the decision to set it in ancient Rome, 64 AD.

Assassin’s Creed has officially started production in Rome. Throughout Assassin’s Creed franchise, we were transported to a number of places rich in history. These include Jerusalem/Acre in 1191, Florence and Rome in the 1400s-1500s, and the Caribbean in the 1700s. So the setting of ancient Rome is different than some fans might have expected.
Indeed, one X fan described the setting as “really disappointing”, saying it strays too far from what made the games iconic. As a result, there are concerns that this could be a failure for Netflix, a valid concern whenever games are adapted for the screen.
Ugh… really disappointing. 😞 Another live-action adaptation that could easily fail. Setting it in Rome 64 AD with an “original story” feels like Netflix is straying too far from what made Assassin’s Creed iconic: the complex historical storytelling and connection to…March 20, 2026
Another comment suggests that Netflix will have to work hard to ensure the writing quality is good, instead of just focusing on great architecture. Style over substance seems to be a concern in some circles, although getting the visuals right is important. A big reason I’m so drawn to games is their transportive nature and how easy it is to get lost in locations.
While not as critical as the above, this fan seems to worry about relying too much on location so the plot gets lost.
Ancient Rome offers infinite visual grandeur, but the writing will matter more than the architecture.March 20, 2026
One cautious fan described the original story as a “bold move,” so expectations are definitely high. Currently, Netflix is remaining tight-lipped on the exact plot, with an early teaser from Tudum describing it as “following its characters through pivotal historical events as they fight to shape the destiny of humanity.”
The original story is a bold move… curious how it connects to history.March 20, 2026
Reception of the story and location of origin has been mixed thus far. But with Western worldit’s Roberto Patino and HaloIf David Wiener is at the helm of the project, it might surprise fans in a good way.
It’s obviously way too early to tell, and since filming has just started, we’ll have to wait a bit to see how it plays out.
