The subtitles and the best streaming services are a match made in paradise: Netflix says that almost half of its hours of vision in the United States occur with subtitles and legends, and I can confirm that what is concerned, it is closer to 100%.
It’s great, but Netflix has identified a way to make it more useful for many viewers when watching one of the best Netflix films or the best Netflix programs: subtitles that show only the spoken dialogue.
The existing and very useful subtitle functions do not disappear. Netflix rather adds an additional option.
How will new Netflix subtitles work
For the moment, the subtitles you get on Netflix are designed for deaf or hard of hearing. And that means that the subtitles are for everything – so they will tell you if a phone rings, or if there are frightening sounds, or if there is an explosion.
These subtitles remain of course because they are very important.
But the subtitles can also be useful even if you do not have hearing problems: think of the completely incomprehensible scourge in The black knight goes up.
Some characters are difficult to hear, and certain films of films and survey shows do not always make the speech as strong as some of us would like it.
Light the subtitles to avoid the “What did she say?” The moments are practical for that, but that means that we can get a lot of details that we don’t need. Think “(Dramatic Music Plays)” or “(telephone rings)”.
From today, you will see a new option in the subtitles menu. It will only be available in You Season 5 today, and it is only for English language options. But it will soon be much more widely available and will also make its way to other languages.
Now, when you go to subtitles, you will see two options for English-speaking subtitles: English and English (CC). English is purely for the spoken dialogue, and English (CC) gives you the whole shebang.
[Audience applauds].
