New gas reserves discovered in KP for the second consecutive day

Latest discovery of reserves of 1.58 million cubic feet per day to improve country’s energy security through indigenous resources, says PPL

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced the discovery of new gas reserves in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for the second consecutive day and informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange about the latest discovery.

According to a letter released by PPL, gas reserves of 1.58 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) have been discovered in the TAL block in Kohat district. The discovery follows an earlier announcement of oil and gas reserves in the district, for which the Prime Minister had congratulated the nation.

In its disclosure, PPL said that the TAL joint venture, comprising MOL Pakistan Oil & Gas Co BV (as operator), Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), PPL, Pakistan Oilfields Limited (POL) and Government Holdings Private Limited (GHPL), discovered gas from the Hangu/Lumshiwal formations in its Bilitang-1 exploration well, located in Kohat district, KP province.

The company said drilling of the exploration well began on August 10, 2025 and the well was successfully drilled to a total vertical depth of 4,011 meters.

According to the release, “Based on the LWD/wireline log data interpretation results, the Hangu/Lumshiwal formations (exploratory targets) were initially successfully tested at a flow rate of 1.58 MMscfd of gas in a 40/64 inch choke against a wellhead flow pressure of 164 pounds per square inch.

PPL said the discovery has “reduced the risks of further exploration in the TAL block, leading to new upside opportunities,” adding that the discovery would help improve the country’s energy security through indigenous resources.

The company further noted that the discovery would add to the hydrocarbon reserves of PPL, its joint venture partners and the country, while prospects for additional discoveries in the region remain.
