The first hope of the NFL draft, Ashton Jeanty, knew one of the most dominant seasons in the history of university football for Boisse State last season.
The 21 -year -old ball carrier ran 2,601 yards and 29 affected, has an average of seven yards by attempted and ended his season with the second plus yards in a single season in the history of university football. Only Barry Sanders had more yards in a single season.
Jeanty’s runners coach James Montgomery recently spoke with PK Press Club Digital to discuss the player’s historic season.

While he burst into the national scene and engraved in records in 2024 during his junior season, Jeanty had a similar success in the second year.
However, Montgomery said the plan entering the second season of Jeanty was that he was going to be part of a “two -headed monster”.
“It was a little crazy because by entering the 23 season, I thought it would be a two -headed monster, but George (Holani) ended up injuring himself during the second piece against Uw. I knew in a way Ash was ready to take over on n ° 1, in a way a main role in the rear field and, I mean, we really had no choice,” said a smile.
Jeanty ran for 1,347 yards with 14 affected on the ground while he has an average of 6.1 yards per attempt while catching 43 passes for 569 yards with five receptor receivers during his second season.
Although Jeanty took the main role, Holani was also productive. He ran for 748 yards and seven affected. After this season, Holani signed with the Seattle Seahawks and is currently part of their training team.
With Holani in the NFL, it was up to Jeanty to rely on his solid second year season and to carry the charge.
Montgomery saw the beginnings of a special junior year to percolate in the spring ball.

“The kind of” Lightbulb moment “, we organized a duet game at Spring Ball last year and I saw the way he pressed the hole, and the movements he made. Because I say a little, when we run duo, we have no jumps,” said Montgomery.
“And I always say that you fall from the table, and you find the chute because you read the first donor. And it fell from the table, found the chute, then arrived at the free hat, made it miss and looked at me with a big smile and I knew exactly, yes, the bulb is really lit.” Said Montgomery with a smile.
Montgomery said that in the spring, he and Jeanty discouraged the diapers and went from football 101, 201 and 301, which allowed the two to talk about the game to a higher level.
Jeanty continued to train so hard and improved his mental understanding of the game. Montgomery said Jeanty called her “black fashion” off -season preparations.
“He really didn’t do much in the spring and summer in this season, but he just has work. We have one of the most difficult training in the country. We run the upper decks, and he ran each game of last summer with a weight vest, so it was a little crazy to see him, and he never lost a representative,” said Montgomery.
“If you just looked at it in training, it is first online for each exercise we do, whether it is an offense or special teams, then just the amount of effort it brought every day. It was a little crazy because it did not take too many live measures in the spring ball, then we thought of an autumn camp, we were probably going to try it.

And Montgomery was right. Jeanty didn’t need it.
In the opening match of Boise State last season against Georgia Southern, Jeanty had 20 races for 267 yards and six affected, setting up statistics that you could find in a video game in their 56-45 victory.
Montgomery knew just after this performance that Jeanty had the chance to do something special.
“When you started week 1 with the 267 (Yards), I knew that we were lucky to do something really special. And so even for me, I had to block the outside noise. I couldn’t be on Twitter, I couldn’t be just”, yes, we are so nice “because I knew we just wanted to go better,” said Montgomery.
“Two-thousand yards was our goal initially, and ounce we started to surpass that and get close to that, we just Wanted to Keep Pushing. I’d remember there’d be sometimes in the game, ‘We’re not done, Just Keep Going’ Boch Coming up that Always Said, ‘You can Always get a little bit bit,’ and I Wanted to make sure he never Got satisfied on the Sideline, Becuse it’s a long game and we popped a lot of Runs Early in Games, “Hey, my brother, we have to continue.”
This approach worked well for Jeanty and Broncos de Boisse State.
Jeanty paving the path offensively, the broncos went 12-2 and won the Mountain West conference. The Broncos were seeded n ° 3 in the playoffs of university football and went to the Fiesta Bowl, where they were defeated by Penn State 31-14.

The incredible season of Jeanty almost won him the Heisman trophy. Travis Hunter of Colorado had 552 votes in first place, beating Jeanty 309, which has made it the nearest vote since 2009.
Montgomery will not say if Jeanty should have won the Heisman.
“I mean that I really don’t comment too much, because I have a strong bias with regard to this,” said Montgomery with a smile.
“I got to work with him every day, and I know how good he is, and I know what he could do for our program and how he raised us to even get to the place where we were at the end of this year and I know how hard he worked and how he fought against injuries and how he took care of his body day, but how he did his time. was able to do.
The Heisman conversation between Jeanty and Hunter raged throughout the season and was strongly debated until it was announced.
Montgomery said that the style of running back with which Jeanty Court and made him succeed, reminds him of a legend of the Eagles of Philadelphia.
“I think Brian Westbrook at the time,” said Montgomery. “But I think it’s a mixture of many guys. If he had 5’10 215 (books), you would say he is probably a lot (from Ladainian Tomlinson) in there too, you know what I mean, so I think he is a mixture of many guys. The strange thing is the way he can make guys miss and his contact balance is special.”

As for what he wants Jeanty to land with a certain team or a style of play in the draft of the NFL, Montgomery is convinced that he will prosper which team select him.
“As a coach and as a coach, you obviously want it to be chosen high, but the other element is that you want it to go in a very good situation (offensive line). So, there is that you want it to go to the top 10, but perhaps that if it was going to 18 years, it could happen to a better line O, there is this beautiful balance,” said Montgomery.
“I mean any diagram, we execute a fairly pro offense of pro -style style here, and we have executed all the diagrams that you can execute: interior area, outdoor area, duo, power, counter, crack, as if we had run all the diagrams. He understands how to settle all these elements, and he knows all the blocking schemes when it comes to all this.
Jeanty going to the NFL, he leaves behind a huge hole in the offensive and the Boisse State team. Montgomery knows that there is no replacement to replace it.
“He was the leader of my room and was the captain of my team and he will be one of the big ones of all time here. He does not try to replace him, he tries to make sure to build the best possible room. Also possible. One of the best things I had is to leave it better than you found it, and to have his presence in our room, they have always understood.
“It is not really a pressure for them because it is their big brother, they want to be like him, and they all want to take their photos and take out tradition in life. Certainly, we have big shoes to fill, but I do not think that we are going to reproduce anything because everyone is different, and it is obviously a special talent.”

Not only will Montgomery miss the player, but the Jeanty person is too.
“He is a great child so fun, but the things that I miss is his ability to have fun. As he dances before a cliché because you played the music and all this, then to see two seconds before the click lock and go there,” said Montgomery.
Montgomery and the rest of football will discover which team will select the “special talent” which is Jeanty on Thursday, April 24, when the first round of the NFL draft takes place in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
