Former Dallas Cowboys star Troy Aikman apparently took a dig at NFL officials Monday night after Washington commanders were called out for unnecessary brutality toward Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The play took place in the fourth quarter. Commanders defensive lineman Jer’Zhan Newton broke through the Chiefs offensive line to sack Mahomes. As the whistles blew to end the game, Newton threw Mahomes to the ground and received the penalty.

Aikman seemed a little perplexed.

“It wasn’t much, but having said that, when it comes to quarterbacks, especially this one, they’re going to protect him. … It’s just a lot of frustration coming out on his part,” Aikman said.

The penalty did not change the final score in any way. The Chiefs came alive in the second half and scored 21 unanswered points to win the game 28-7.

NFL officials’ favoritism toward Mahomes has been a hot topic among fans at Chiefs games. But any quarterback who has dominated the league and won three Super Bowls since 2019 will receive all kinds of criticism.

The bulk of the scrutiny came earlier this year during the Chiefs’ playoff victory over the Houston Texans. Mahomes called two questionable penalties that led to 10 points on two separate drives.

“I’ve kind of learned that no matter what happens in the game, something’s going to come out of it if you win and you keep winning, so I don’t really pay attention to that,” Mahomes told 96.5 The Fan after the playoff game. “I mean, obviously, I’ve been on both sides as far as how I thought the decisions were made, but at the end of the day, man, these guys are doing their best to make the best decisions and stay where the players are playing in the game.

“And that’s what decides the outcome. And obviously there was a call here or there that people didn’t agree with, but at the same time, I think there were a lot of other actions that really decided the outcome of that football game.”

The NFL said at the time that officials made the right decisions in the playoff game.
