NFL officiating is a hot topic every week around the league, as fans, players and coaches have complained about lack of consistency in games or crucial calls made late.

Denver Broncos defensive back Riley Moss was the target of nearly a dozen penalties during the 2025 season, costing the team 203 yards, according to The Football Database.

On Sunday, Moss was called for a penalty on Green Bay Packers receiver Matthew Golden. He placed his left hand on Golden’s right arm for a split second while the ball was in the air. It was this decision that apparently attracted attention.

Broncos star Patrick Surtain II has been Moss’ biggest defender.

“Yeah, I think those calls are pretty tricky,” Surtain said Wednesday. “I just think there are examples around the league where other guys are doing the exact same thing and they’re not getting called out for it.

“But at the end of the day, he keeps his head up and moves on to the next play.”

Surtain, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, also joked in October that Moss was being racially profiled by officials amid the series of sanctions against him.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton was as upset as everyone else.

“Look, he’s still competing,” Payton said. “I can’t pronounce the word, but it starts with an ‘A’ on that decision. It’s just… holy cow. And it’s a frustrating thing, I’m sure, for him. But he’ll continue to compete. He’s tough, he came back with a big interception. You know, the New York one was brutal. But he’ll continue to compete. We’ve got to get better overall in seeing and being consistent in calling those decisions.”

Moss has 65 tackles and 15 assists this season.
