President Donald Trump will attend the Washington Commanders-Detroit Lions game at Northwest Field in Landover, Maryland, on Sunday.
Trump will be on hand to celebrate the veterans’ memorial at halftime of the game, joining Commanders owner Josh Harris in the owner’s suite. Pat McAfee broke the news first, citing “sources.” The Trump administration later confirmed the news by sharing McAfee’s report on social media.
This will be the first NFL game Trump will play in this season. He was at Super Bowl LIX, won by the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs, in New Orleans.

September was a whirlwind for the president, who attended the US Open men’s final, a New York Yankees match exactly 24 years after the September 11 attacks, and the Friday afternoon session of the Ryder Cup – all in New York.
Trump also attended a Pittsburgh Steelers game last year.
Trump won’t be able to see Jayden Daniels in action because the Commanders quarterback dislocated his left elbow following a fumbled tackle during their blowout loss Sunday to the Seattle Seahawks.
The game is a rematch of last year’s NFC Divisional Round, which the Commanders won, surprisingly ending the Lions’ season, in which they had won first place.

Trump found himself in a standoff with the Commanders organization earlier this year, threatening to shut down the team’s plans to build a new stadium in national capital if they didn’t bring back their old “Redskins” nickname.
“My statement about the Washington Redskins totally blew up, but only in a very positive way,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social article. “I can put one restriction on them: If they don’t change the original name to ‘Washington Redskins’ and get rid of the ridiculous ‘Washington Commanders’ nickname, I won’t make a deal for them to build a stadium in Washington. The team would be much more valuable and the deal would be more exciting for everyone.”
Trump also called the commanders “Washington ‘Whatever,'” adding that the Cleveland Guardians should do the same. However, for now, it appears that the parties have buried the hatchet.
The front offices of both teams have stated that there are no plans to revert to their old names, or even change them in any way again.

News of Trump’s presence follows the Pentagon’s announcement earlier that, due to the government shutdown, there is no funding for possible flyovers or other similar events throughout the NFL’s “Salute to Service” campaign this weekend.
The game will begin at 4:25 p.m. ET.
