The Los Angeles Rams earned a 41-34 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday as a controversial touchdown helped prop up the NFC West’s top team.

In the third quarter, Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford found tight end Colby Parkinson running down the sideline and placed the ball in a perfect spot for his teammate to catch. Parkinson entered the end zone and the play was initially ruled a touchdown.

The officials looked the part. It could have been argued that Parkinson was in possession of the ball and could have been judged on the one yard line. But hopes that the touchdown would be taken off the board were immediately dispelled. Officials responded to the call.

It was a 26-yard touchdown run from Stafford to Parkinson, but a debate over whether it was the right call began on social media.

Detroit tried to get back into the game with a touchdown from David Montgomery late in the game. But the Lions didn’t get the ball back with enough time left to do anything substantial.

Detroit’s Jared Goff had 338 yards and three touchdowns. He was only fired once.
