- OpenAI signed an agreement with the US Department of War
- As a result, a significant number of ChatGPT users are leaving the app
- Anthropic had previously raised security and safety concerns
After Claude developer Anthropic backed out of a deal with the US War Department over safety and security concerns, OpenAI decided to sign a deal with the military – and ChatGPT users are far from happy about it.
As Windows Central reports, a growing number of people are canceling their ChatGPT subscriptions and switching to other AI chatbots, including Claude. A quick browse on social networks or Reddit is enough to see that this decision is causing a growing reaction.
Meanwhile, tech investor Aidan Gold spoke to X to point out that OpenAI had supported Anthropic’s security posture just before signing a deal with the DoW. The US government has also announced its intention to remove Claude from all its departments from now on.
Troubled ethics of AI
Let me be clear: Anthropic refused to work with DoW unless they could promise that their technology was not used for surveillance or murder. DoW said they need full capabilities. Anthropic refused to provide full access. OpenAI has stood alongside Anthropic to ensure AI safety.…February 28, 2026
The ethics of AI have long been murky: Most of today’s popular chatbots were trained on mountains of stolen and copyrighted work, which carries the threat of triggering mass layoffs and consumes enormous amounts of energy.
However, earlier this week, Anthropic drew the line when it came to allowing its AI technology to be used for “mass surveillance” and “fully autonomous weapons.” Anthropic wanted safeguards in place in these areas, and the DoW was not prepared to accept them.
Enter OpenAI: the company says its deal with the US military “has more safeguards” than the one Anthropic rejected, including around mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons, with “red lines” that OpenAI plans to enforce in the future.
However, ChatGPT users are not convinced, especially regarding the “for all legal purposes” language used in the transaction. It’s a debate that will go on and on, but in the meantime, Claude has reached the number one spot in the Apple App Store.
