North Korea unveils new nuclear-powered submarine amid regional tensions

North Korea has released the latest images of its nuclear-powered submarine as South Korea gets the United States’ blessing to pursue nuclear-capable submarines of its own.

Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un inspected the massive submarine at an indoor construction facility, saying it had not yet entered service. Its implementation will provide a major boost to North Korea’s naval capabilities, as only the United States, China, India, Russia, France and the United Kingdom possess this technology.

South Korea’s efforts to gain U.S. approval for such high-tech submarines have added urgency to the North Korean project first publicly announced by Kim Jong Un in March.

Nuclear-capable submarines are far superior to conventional submarines because they can stay submerged longer, are quieter and much faster.

According to North Korean state media, Kim stressed the importance of the 8,700-ton ship in ensuring the country’s defense, which relies on the greatest offensive power.

THE Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) Kim quoted: “We regard super-strong offensive capability as the best shield for national security in the developing armed forces. »

He also criticized South Korea for developing similar weapons technology, saying it poses a threat to North Korean security that must be countered.

According to CNNbased on the ship’s movement and size in the images, it appears to be an equivalent to the US Navy’s Virginia-class attack submarines.
