- NVIDIA announced that the support of the GTX 10 GPUS ends in October 2025
- After that, these graphics cards, including the GTX 1060, will only obtain security fixes
- He also announced that the management of Windows 10 would take place until October 2026, reflecting the prolonged support program of Microsoft for the operating system
NVIDIA has published a new graphic pilot and announced that it would soon draw the curtain on the management of GPIFORCE GTX 10 GPUS, as well as GTX 900 models – and the end of Windows 10 players will follow a year later.
As Ars Technica highlighted, the publication notes of version 580.88 of the pilot came with the revelation that the graphics cards based on Maxwell and Pascal Architecture – which means that the GTX 900 and 10 series products will be assisted during their final release of the pilot in October 2025.
After that, they will only get quarterly updates to correct them against vulnerabilities, and that’s it. The security fixes will also end in October 2028 for these products.
If October 2025 rings a bell, it is because it is also the month when Microsoft throws the management of Windows 10, and this is also wrapped in this Nvidia ad.
Team Green said that it extends the management of the pilot ready for the part for Windows 10 to October 2026, to reflect the prolonged support that Microsoft offers consumers who want to stick to the operating system, and not yet go to Windows 11. Or indeed, people who may not be able to move to the new operating system, due to their PC not meeting material requirements.
This decision is not surprising, because Nvidia already told us at the beginning of July that the V580 drivers would be the last to support the Maxwell and Pascal graphics cards – we simply did not know exactly when the threshold arrived, and now we do it.
If you are affected, what exactly does that mean?
As indicated, there are two categories of PC players who affect: those with the GTX 10 GPU models, such as the GTX 1060, and those who execute Windows 10. In addition, some people will be in both camps, without any doubt – maybe not bad.
The GTX 10 series graphics cards are still reasonably popular in some cases (while GTX 900 products have roughly decreased). In fact, the GTX 1060 is in fact the 12th most popular GPU according to the latest Steam hardware survey – and once prevailing Supreme – it is therefore always to be used.
After October 2025, this GPU, as well as other offers in the 10 series such as 1070 and 1080, will only receive security updates. This means that they will always be safe to use – corrected against all the exploits of the pilots which can be found by the bad players – but they will not obtain the support of new games or features.
So, over time, you will find that your faithful GTX 1060 becomes more empty and less reliable with the new games, because its final version of the driver ages and generally becomes more erratic. Note that if you stick to old games, which have been taken care of before the game medium is frozen, everything should be fine, at least in theory.
As for those of Windows 10, you will still agree for another year. You will always have a complete driver’s support until October 2026, as indicated, you will therefore go well so far. Assuming that you keep Windows 10 himself, of course – using the microsoft offer of prolonged support, which is now free, with a slight plug.
After October 2026, however, you will have to go to Windows 11, or you will not get new drivers – so no game support or safety fixes either – whatever your new NVIDIA GPU.
At this point, you really consider an upgrade of Windows 11 – or a transition to something else – unless Microsoft extends Windows 10 support more for consumers beyond 2026 (which seems unlikely, but could occur). In this case, Nvidia could again reflect the movement with its own pilots – since this is what happened here – but nothing is guaranteed by any means.
