The New York Icelanders made defender Matthew Schaefer the choice n ° 1 during the NHL 2025 draft Friday.
Schaefer, 17, is 6 feet 2 inches and Hamilton, Ontario.
He has spent the last two seasons with Erie Otters from the Ontario hockey league.

Schaefer only played 17 games last year before breaking his collarbone in December, but his sense of the two ends of the ice has always propelled him to the top of almost all the draft boards.
Schaefer is only the fifth defender written n ° 1 in total in the NHL recovery since 2000, and the first from Owen Power went to Buffalo in 2021.

Schaefer persevered by the tragedy to reach this stage. Schaefer’s mother Jennifer died of cancer 16 months ago, and he endured the recent death of the owner of the otters, Jim Waters, and the mother of his tickets.
When Schaefer shot his Icelanders sweater for the first time, he kissed the pink ribbon stain on the chest representing the consciousness of breast cancer before melting into tears.

The Icelanders won the lottery to choose first in a draft filled with talents.
There was no absolute locking of a n ° 1 choice in this area, although Schaefer was clearly released.
The project also lacked centralized format which has long been a basic food for this annual exercise. The 32 different team executives are mainly at home, not in terms of recourse at Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles.
