NYT Connections today (game #895) – the answers
The answers to today’s Connections game #895 are…
- YELLOW: A LITTLE Dab, Drip, Splash, Touch
- GREEN: NAVY SALTY DOG, SKIPPER, SWAB, TAR
- BLUE: TROPICAL FRUITS/VEGETABLES BITTER MELON, CHAYOTE, DURIAN, COROSOL
- PURPLE: ____ DEAL BIG, PLEA, ROUGH, DEAR
- My rating: Hard
- My rating: 2 errors
I lost two mistakes trying to put together the group which became LITTLE BIT. My first thought was that it was about applying a small amount of something – so I got SWAB instead of TOUCH, then swapped that with TAR before finally seeing some sense.
SALTY DOG was the tile that unlocked the green group. I always liked this term: Quint (Robert Shaw) in Jaws being the epitome of one. A Salty Dog is the kind of gnarly, bearded person who’s half man, half wool sweater and desperately needs a bath, but whose maritime knowledge is their superpower.
The blue group I got was due to DURIAN, which is the kind of fruit you eat as a dare (hence its nickname – vomit fruit), but I’m annoyed that I didn’t see the very attractive purple group today. Congratulations if you made it.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little more difficult, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t need to solve the final question, as you will be able to answer it through a process of elimination. Additionally, you can make up to four mistakes, giving you some breathing room.
However, it’s a bit more complex than something like Wordle, and the game provides plenty of opportunities to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that could obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games website on computer or mobile.
