I’m sure I wasn’t the only player tempted by the idea of forming a connection between HIP, BACK and PELVIS today. The only thing that stopped me from putting them in a group was the lack of a fourth body part.
My mistake came in what would later become BANALITY – I had GUSHER (as in someone gushing banally about a celebrity or paid sponsored product) instead of CHESTNUT, which I had forgotten was slang for an outdated joke or point of view.
I was excited to get the purple/hardest group before the end. The gift was PELVIS, but the band also featured someone I interviewed in my past life as a music journalist during what was probably the most awkward 30 minutes of my life after I upset them with a cheeky question about an alleged affair and they spent the rest of the interview answering either “yes,” “no” or “I don’t care.”

- YELLOW: EMANATION DIVERSION, VENTILATION, RADIATION, SPREAD
What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little more difficult, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you technically don’t need to solve the final question, as you will be able to answer it through a process of elimination. Additionally, you can make up to four mistakes, giving you some breathing room.
However, it’s a bit more complex than something like Wordle, and the game provides plenty of opportunities to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that could obscure the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT Games website on computer or mobile.
