NYT TODAY Connections (Game # 743) – Answers
The answers to today’s connections, the game # 743, are…
- Yellow: types of jeans Boyfriend, flare, mom, thin
- Green: fictional categories Historical, literary, speculative, young adult
- Blue: Words in Hemingway titles Bell, farewell, old man, sun
- Violet: ___ glass glass Cocktail, collins, old -fashioned, shot
- My note: Hard
- My score: Fail
The first thing I thought when I saw today’s connections was “alcoholic drinks” – not because I’m obsessed (I’m not a big drinker), but because the old and collins could both be types of cocktails. But the presence of cocktail herself suggested that it was a bad direction, so I looked elsewhere.
Historical, literary, speculative and young adult all seemed examples of fictional categories and indeed my intuition was correct, giving me green.
Then, I thought that Flare, Skinny and Bell could all be linked to jeans, or types of pants style – but I did not know what the fourth would be, then continuing to look.
And I continued to search. And research.
With nothing else suggesting, I returned to this potential group and I tried a succession of words – mom, old and old man – but I was wrong every time. It turns out that Bell was wrong, and what I should have had was the boyfriend, the rocket, mom and lean – but I have never heard the term Jean of a boyfriend and I lost my nascent sequence so much.
With hindsight, I should probably have abandoned this angle earlier, but none of the words in Hemingway or ___ glass in glass glass were groups that I would have ever had, so that would have made no difference.
How did you do today? Let me know in the comments below.
Responsible for yesterday’s NYT connections (Sunday, June 22, match # 742)

- Purple: what “left” could mean Disappeared, port, progressive, remaining
What is NYT connections?
Nyt Connections is one of the many increasingly popular puns produced by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four elements that share something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow a little harder, blue often quite hard and generally very difficult.
On the positive side, you do not technically need to resolve the last, because you can respond to it by an elimination process. In addition, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing margin.
However, it is a little more involved than something like Wordle, and there are a lot of opportunities so that the game makes you trip with towers. For example, pay attention to homophones and other word games that could disguise the answers.
It is playable for free via the NYT games site on the desktop or mobile.
