NYT Strands today (game #737) – the answers
The answers to today’s Strands, game #737, are…
- GOOD MORNING
- HI
- TO WELCOME
- GREETINGS
- AHOY
- GREETINGS
- SPANGRAM: HELLO
- My rating: Easy
- My rating: Perfect
I remember the words “hell is in hello” from the musical Paint your wagon because that’s how I started today’s game of Strands.
It comes from the song Wandering Starsung beautifully in a gruff manner by actor Lee Marvin, whose character preferred to leave the scene rather than arrive there.
Unlike Mr. Marvin, I like refined people with ostentatious vocabulary and would like to be greeted every morning by someone, preferably a butler with a tray of tea and toast offering me GREETINGS.
I also have a soft spot for an AHOY – it was the telephone greeting proposed by Alexander Graham Bell, something his less boating-inclined telephone rival Thomas Edison replaced with the less cheerful HELLO.
Missing from this list is the term for hello everyone used throughout my school years, the now largely redundant “watcha” and its goodbye equivalent “seeya”.
