Laura Dahlmeier, twice Olympic gold medalistdied at the age of 31 due to her injuries from a mountaineering accident earlier this week.
German biathlete was struck by the fall of rocks in northern Pakistan in the Karakoram mountains.
Anticipated rescue efforts were made to locate Dahlmeier, but failed due to the weather and additional falls of falls – the distant location of the incident has made the efforts even more difficult.

“The news of the death of twice Olympic champion in biathlon Laura Dahlmeier in a terrible mountaineering accident is deeply shocking for all of us in the Olympic movement. She lost their lives in her beloved mountains,” said IOC president Kirsty Coventry.
“Laura has entered history at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympic Games as the first female biathlete to win the sprint and the pursuit of gold during the same edition of the Games. She will remain memories forever. Our reflections are with her family and friends at this very difficult moment.”
According to the management of Dahlmeier, the accident took place at an altitude of nearly 19,000 feet.
A spokesperson for the Pakistani government said that she “had been taken by residents of the landslide site,” said Reuters.

Dahlmeier was surprisingly moved from the professional competition in 2019. She cited the decrease in her global passion to play sports in her retirement announcement.
“After an incredibly difficult season with a lot of ups and downs, I no longer feel the 100% passion for professional sports. This is why, after a long reflection, I decided to put an end to my active biathlon career,” said Dahlmeier in 2019, at the age of 25.
She won gold medals in 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongchangWhere she entered history as a first woman biathlete to win a double sprint and prosecution in the same games. She also won seven world championships.

Dahlmeier is also an Olympic bronze medalist. She finished in third place in the individual event of 15 km during the 2018 Games.
